The Ballet centers are about the Little Mermaid who dwells in an underwater kingdom with her father, the Sea King, and her five older sisters, each of whom has been born one year apart. When a mermaid turns 15, she is permitted to swim to the surface for the first time to glimpse the world above, and when the sisters become old enough, each of them visits the upper world, one at a time, every year.  The little Mermaid listens longingly to their various descriptions of the world inhabited by human beings.  When it’s the Little Mermaid’s turn, she swims up to the surface, watches a birthday celebration being held on a ship in honor of a handsome prince, and falls in love with him from a safe distance.  A violent storm hits, and the Little Mermaid saves the prince from drowning, and delivers him unconscious, to the shore near the palace.  Here, she puts a special sea amulet around the prince’s neck, which was given to her from her beloved mother before her death.  The Little Mermaid waits until some friends from the kingdom find the prince and then she disappears into the sea.  To her dismay, the prince only has a vague image of the person who saved him and he returns to the palace.

The rest of the story centers around the Little Mermaid’s adventures, including encounters with a Sea Witch, longing and love for the prince, and interest in becoming human.  The Little Mermaid Ballet is a visual spectacle complete with beautiful costumes, elaborate sets, and unique choreography.  The cast includes all the KBT professional company dancers as well as many students from the Academy.
