The Company
History of The Company
The KBT Professional Company was formed in 1998 with several professional company dancers from Lexington Ballet when their Board of Directors in May of that year decided to eliminate their professional company. On August 31, 1998, Ballet Theatre of Lexington opened its doors to a new studio facility on National Avenue, for the Academy and Professional Company under the direction of former dancer Xijun Fu its first Artistic Director. In July of 2000, Ballet Theatre of Lexington changed its name to Kentucky Ballet Theatre to reflect its expanding service area. In October of 2000 Xijun Fu announced his plan to retire in April of 2001. Following his retirement, principal dancer Norbe Risco Avila became the Artistic Director.

The Lexington Opera House, Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center, and Woodland Park are regularly utilized local theater venues. However, touring around Kentucky is often a regular part of the Company performance season each year in selected cities like Somerset, Bowling Green, Ashland, Paducah and Georgetown. Kentucky Ballet Theatre has also been a part of an international collaboration with Cuba and Mexico. The Artistic Director is invited regularly to teach company dancers exciting new pieces from those countries. He also has worked to set full ballets from his choreography in the KBT repertoire, sharing his abilities and educating new generations of dancers.
The Artistic Director is always looking into setting brand new ballets for the company repertoire, keeping the Company dancers challenged and performing at a high level. Kentucky Ballet Theatre is a very desirable place for dancers to grow artistically which remains as one of the Artistic Director’s long-time goals.
Norbe Risco, Artistic Director

Norbe Risco began his dance training in Camaguey, Cuba, in 1980. After graduating from the Professional Art School, he performed as a guest artist at Italy’s Teatro Nuovo and joined the Ballet de Camaguey under the direction of Fernando Alonso. In 1990, he became Principal dancer and toured all over the world. Three years later, he joined the Ballet de Monterrey, Mexico, under the direction of Ann Marie D’Angelo and Fernando Bujones.
Risco has also worked with choreographers and dancers such as Melissa Haydn and Cynthia Gregory. He has been a member of Ballet Theater of Chicago and Lyric Opera of Chicago. His repertoire includes roles such as Dracula in Dracula, Phantom in Phantom of the Opera, and Siegfried in Swan Lake. He performed in a Principal role in Le Corsaire (pas de deux), Don Quixote (pas de deux), Romeo and Juliet (pas de deux), and Nutcracker, among others.
Risco has served as the Artistic Director of KBT since 2001. In that role, he has choreographed existing and original works such as Don Quixote, Hoops (a comedic tribute to Kentucky basketball), and The Night Before Christmas. In 2011, he received the “Al Smith Award” in choreography from the Kentucky Arts Council, which recognizes professional Kentucky artists who demonstrate high-level excellence.
