Karen Sakamoto, Apprentice
Karen was born in Fukuoka, Japan. She began her ballet training at the age of five with the Sugai Classic Ballet Studio. Throughout her time there, she performed in multiple ballets including Coppelia as Swanhilda, Le Corsaire pas de deux, and The Sleeping Beauty as Aurora, Bluebird, and Lilac Fairy. In addition to her ballet training, she studied contemporary and character dance styles. In 2018, Karen transferred to the Estonia National Ballet where she trained under the direction of Linner Looris and his assistant director, David Matthews. She was able to perform roles such as Napoli, waltz, and swans in Swan Lake, Friends of the Montague in Romeo and Juliet, a housekeeper in The Sleeping Beauty, a snowflake in The Nutcracker, a mouse, flower, and card in Alice in Wonderland, and a ballerina in Picasso. Karen is looking forward to spending her second season with Kentucky Ballet Theatre.
